The site’s long-term remedy included containment of contaminated soil, treatment of contaminated groundwater, installation of a clay cap and leachate collection system, and ongoing groundwater monitoring. Bay City Middlegrounds is a federal Superfund site in Michigan. The Superfund program, created by Congress in 1980, addresses sites where hazardous substances have been released or threaten release into the environment. EPA scores potential sites using the Hazard Ranking System; those that score high enough are placed on the National Priorities List.
Current status: Proposed for NPL. This site has been proposed for the National Priorities List but is not yet formally listed. Proposal triggers a public comment period. If listed, EPA conducts a remedial investigation to characterize contamination before selecting a cleanup approach.
